Dental treatment with sedation

Sedation dentistry is an excellent option for those who experience anxiety or fear when visiting the dentist. It is a safe and effective procedure that allows you to relax and remain calm throughout the entire treatment.

Although modern dentistry allows most procedures to be performed without pain, some patients experience significant stress during dental treatment. For those who feel intense fear or find it difficult to tolerate discomfort, dental treatment with sedation may be the solution. This is a safe and reliable way to calm down during treatment and perform the necessary dental procedures, thus ensuring good oral health.
The Albodent dental clinic in Vilnius uses intravenous sedation, which is performed by experienced anesthesiologists.

What is sedation?

Sedation is the suppression of consciousness with medication, where the patient remains conscious but becomes relaxed, drowsy, and completely calm. They feel no fear, stress, or discomfort. This is not general anesthesia – the person is usually conscious and can respond to questions or instructions, but everything seems like a dream, and after the procedure, they usually remember nothing.
Sedation is only used with the patient’s consent. A doctor’s consultation and health assessment are required beforehand.

Who is sedation treatment recommended for?

Sedation may be beneficial if:

  • you are facing a long or complicated oral surgery procedure;
  • you feel very anxious or fearful before dental treatment;
  • you have a low pain threshold;
  • you feel nauseous during dental treatment;
  • you have a disability or disorder that complicates treatment.

Sedation helps to create a safe and calm environment for the patient, allowing treatment to be performed more quickly and accurately, without additional stress.

How is intravenous sedation performed?

The course of treatment with sedation:

  • Preparation. The patient arrives at the clinic on an empty stomach (having not eaten for 6 hours or drunk anything for 3 hours).
  • Sedation. A catheter (thin needle) is inserted into the patient’s vein. Sedatives are administered through it. The patient falls asleep and relaxes. Heart activity, breathing, blood pressure, and blood oxygen levels are monitored throughout the procedure. The amount of medication is carefully regulated. The patient is supervised by an experienced anesthesiologist throughout the entire treatment.
  • Procedure. The dentist performs the planned treatment. During this time, the patient is drowsy but responds to the dentist’s instructions and breathes independently.
  • Additional medications. Antibiotics, painkillers, and anti-inflammatory drugs are often administered intravenously at the same time.
  • Recovery. During sedation, even long procedures seem like a short dream, and upon waking up, patients often do not remember what happened during the treatment. For several hours after the procedure, the patient may feel slightly dizzy, so they should not drive a car themselves and must be accompanied by another person.

What is the difference between intravenous sedation and general anesthesia?

Intravenous sedation is a lighter and safer form of anesthesia, during which the patient remains drowsy but partially conscious. They breathe on their own, can respond to simple instructions, but do not feel fear, pain, or the passage of time.

During sedation, the body remains in a completely safe state and the mind rests. If you just want to “sleep through” an unpleasant procedure, this form of anesthesia is right for you. It is an excellent solution for those who are looking for treatment without stress, tension, or unpleasant memories.

General anesthesia is a deep loss of consciousness where the person is completely “turned off” and often breathes through a machine. This form of anesthesia requires a longer recovery time. Side effects such as nausea, headache, or disorientation are also more common after anesthesia.

In most cases, intravenous sedation is sufficient in dentistry—it is safe, effective, and ensures the patient’s calmness throughout the treatment.

What is important to know before treatment?

To ensure that the sedation procedure goes smoothly, please follow these recommendations:

  • Do not eat for 6 hours before treatment.
  • Do not drink any liquids for 3 hours before treatment.
  • If you have a cough, a cold, a fever, or are ill, be sure to inform your doctor—the procedure will have to be postponed.
  • You may feel a little dizzy after the treatment, so have someone accompany you to take you home and look after you.
